1 House Resolution
2 A resolution designating the week of February 23-March
3 1, 2026, as "Eating Disorders Awareness Week" in
4 Florida.
6 WHEREAS, eating disorders affect 28.8 million Americans,
7 including 1.8 million Floridians, without regard to gender,
8 gender identity, age, race, ethnicity, body shape and weight,
9 ability, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status, and
10 WHEREAS, eating disorders, specifically anorexia nervosa,
11 bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant restrictive
12 food intake disorder, and other feeding or eating disorders, are
13 complex, biologically based illnesses, and
14 WHEREAS, eating disorders are highly prevalent among
15 servicemembers and veterans of the United States Armed Forces,
16 and
17 WHEREAS, eating disorders are associated with serious
18 physical health consequences, including irregular heartbeat,
19 heart disease and heart failure, kidney failure, osteoporosis,
20 gastric rupture, tooth decay, obesity, gallbladder disease,
21 diabetes, and death, and
22 WHEREAS, in the United States, 10,200 deaths occur annually
23 as a direct result of an eating disorder, equating to one death
24 every 52 minutes, and
25 WHEREAS, eating disorders have the second highest mortality
26 rate among all psychiatric illnesses in the United States, and
27 WHEREAS, with early detection and intervention, long-term
28 recovery from an eating disorder is possible, and
29 WHEREAS, the National Alliance for Eating Disorders, a
30 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Florida, is a
31 leading national eating disorders organization dedicated to the
32 outreach, education, support, and early intervention for all
33 eating disorders, and
34 WHEREAS, the National Eating Disorders Association, the
35 largest nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting
36 individuals and families affected by eating disorders, serves as
37 a catalyst for prevention, cures, and access to quality care,
38 NOW, THEREFORE,
40 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
41 Florida:
43 That the week of February 23-March 1, 2026, is designated
44 as "Eating Disorders Awareness Week" in Florida to increase
45 awareness and education concerning eating disorders.
