THE BILL ITSELF
HR 8015
FSGS Awareness Day
1
House Resolution
2
A resolution recognizing June 10, 2026, as "FSGS
3
Awareness Day" in Florida.
5
WHEREAS, Florida has a high prevalence of chronic kidney
6
disease relative to other states, and 30 percent of Medicare
7
beneficiaries in Florida have chronic kidney disease, which is
8
higher than any other state, and
9
WHEREAS, the third leading cause of chronic kidney disease
10
is glomerulonephritis, and
11
WHEREAS, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a
12
condition referring to the scarring in the kidneys and often
13
leads to a difficult journey that can result in kidney failure,
14
requiring dialysis, transplant, and often cycles of remissions
15
and relapse, and
16
WHEREAS, 50 percent of patients with FSGS require dialysis
17
or a kidney transplant within 5 to 10 years after their
18
diagnosis, and
19
WHEREAS, FSGS is a severe disease because it often
20
progresses rapidly to kidney failure, and even for patients with
21
primary FSGS who receive a kidney transplant, FSGS can recur in
22
the transplanted kidney up to 80 percent of the time, and
23
WHEREAS, kidney diseases rank among the top 10 causes of
24
death for Floridians in a number of age groups, and
25
WHEREAS, FSGS can be diagnosed at any age but is most
26
commonly diagnosed in men over 45 years old, and
27
WHEREAS, according to the United Kingdom's National
28
Registry of Rare Kidney Diseases Database, rare kidney diseases
29
like FSGS make up just five to ten percent of chronic kidney
30
disease patients but account for approximately 30 percent of
31
kidney failures, and
32
WHEREAS, millions of dollars have been raised for research
33
on the severe rare kidney disease FSGS at the Tampa Pig Jig, an
34
event started in 2011 when friends wanted to raise money for a
35
friend diagnosed with the rare kidney disease FSGS, which is now
36
attended by approximately 10,000 people annually in pursuit of a
37
cure for this devastating disease, and
38
WHEREAS, "FSGS Awareness Day" is designated to raise
39
awareness of FSGS, provide support and inspiration to patients
40
and families struggling with the disease, and promote efforts
41
necessary for better diagnosis and access to future treatments
42
that can transform the course of the disease, NOW, THEREFORE,
44
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
45
Florida:
47
That June 10, 2026, is recognized as "FSGS Awareness Day"
48
in Florida.
