1 House Resolution

2 A resolution recognizing July 25, 2026, as "Afro-

3 Latina, Afro-Caribbean, and Diaspora Women's Day" in

4 Florida.

6 WHEREAS, Afro-descendant women across the globe have played

7 an indelible role in shaping societies, enriching cultures, and

8 advancing the cause of equality, justice, and human rights, and

9 WHEREAS, the music of Celia Cruz, the "Queen of Salsa,"

10 transcended borders and generations with her electrifying

11 performances, powerful voice, and unwavering commitment to her

12 Afro-Cuban roots, and

13 WHEREAS, Miriam Jiménez Román, a pioneering scholar,

14 writer, and activist, has dedicated her life to amplifying the

15 voices and experiences of Afro-Latinas through her

16 groundbreaking research, publications, and advocacy efforts,

17 contributing to the recognition and empowerment of Afro-Latina

18 women, and

19 WHEREAS, Suzanne Comhaire-Sylvain, Haiti's first female

20 anthropologist, made significant contributions to the study of

21 Haitian culture, language, and identity through her pioneering

22 research on Haitian Creole, enriching the understanding of Afro-

23 Caribbean cultural heritage, and

24 WHEREAS, Louise Bennett-Coverley, affectionately known as

25 "Miss Lou," revolutionized Jamaican cultural expression through

26 her poetry, folklore, and advocacy for the use of Jamaican

27 Patois, and as a poet, broadcaster, and performer, she preserved

28 and elevated the oral traditions of Jamaica, inspiring

29 generations to embrace their linguistic heritage and celebrate

30 the vibrancy of Afro-Caribbean identity, and

31 WHEREAS, July 25, 2026, is internationally commemorated as

32 a day to celebrate the heritage and contributions of Afro-

33 descendant women around the world, and

34 WHEREAS, this occasion provides an opportunity to reflect

35 on the achievements and cultural legacies of Afro-Latina, Afro-

36 Caribbean, and diaspora women, including those who live and

37 contribute to communities across Florida, NOW, THEREFORE,

39 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

40 Florida:

42 That July 25, 2026, is recognized as "Afro-Latina, Afro-

43 Caribbean, and Diaspora Women's Day" in Florida.
