1 House Resolution
2 A resolution designating April 2026 as "Minority
3 Health Month" in the State of Florida.
5 WHEREAS, National Minority Health Month is a month-long
6 national initiative to advance health equity across the country
7 on behalf of all racial and ethnic minorities, and
8 WHEREAS, National Minority Health Month began with Booker
9 T. Washington advocating for a National Negro Health Week in
10 1915, and
11 WHEREAS, in 2002, the United States Congress said that a
12 National Minority Health and Health Disparities Month, "should
13 be established to promote educational efforts on the health
14 problems facing minorities and other health disparity
15 populations," and
16 WHEREAS, as an example of such health problems and
17 disparities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and
18 Prevention Office of Health Equity, Black women are three times
19 more likely than white women to die from pregnancy-related
20 causes, and
21 WHEREAS, recent peer-reviewed research demonstrates racial
22 and ethnic disparities in emergency department care, and a
23 national analysis published in 2023, found that non-Hispanic
24 Black and Hispanic patients experienced significantly longer
25 emergency room wait times than non-Hispanic White patients, even
26 after controlling for clinical and demographic factors, with
27 wait times for Black and Hispanic patients approximately 40
28 percent longer, NOW, THEREFORE,
30 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
31 Florida:
33 That April 2026 is designated as "Minority Health Month" in
34 the State of Florida.
