A resolution recognizing September 15 to October 15,

2026, as "Latin and Hispanic Heritage Month" in the
4
State of Florida.

WHEREAS, the national, month-long celebration known as
7
"Hispanic Heritage Month" is dedicated to the culture, history,
8
and contributions of Latin American and Hispanic countries, and
9
WHEREAS, the celebration begins on September 15 to coincide
10
with the national independence days of Guatemala, Honduras, El
11
Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, and
12
WHEREAS, the role of Afro-Latinos in Latin and Hispanic
13
heritage and cultures includes historic milestones, such as
14
Vicente Guerrero, who served as President of Mexico from April
15
to December 1829, and Juan José Nieto Gil, who served as
16
President of Colombia from January 25 to July 18, 1861, each of
17
whom was the first Black president of his respective country,
18
and
19
WHEREAS, there are many influential Latino and Hispanic
20
Americans, including civil rights activist and co-founder of the
21
National Farm Workers Association, Cesar Chavez; the first
22
Hispanic-American woman to travel to space and be inducted into
23
the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame, Ellen Ochoa; and the
24
first Hispanic-American woman to serve as a member of the United
25
States Supreme Court, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and
26
WHEREAS, many Spanish-speaking communities celebrate "Dia
27
de La Raza" on October 12, toward the end of Hispanic Heritage
28
Month, and
29
WHEREAS, according to the 2020 United States Census,
30
5,697,240 Hispanic and Latino people are living in Florida, and
31
WHEREAS, Hispanic and Latino Floridians are the second-
32
largest racial and ethnic group in this state, making up 26
33
percent of the population, NOW, THEREFORE,

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
36
Florida:

That September 15 to October 15, 2026, is recognized as
39
"Latin and Hispanic Heritage Month" in the State of Florida.
