A resolution designating September 2026 as "Childhood

Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida.

WHEREAS, almost 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer
6
in the United States each year, and
7
WHEREAS, approximately 50 children are diagnosed with
8
cancer each day and as of 2023 there are roughly 500,000
9
survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer in the United
10
States, and
11
WHEREAS, each year, many children in Florida face a cancer
12
diagnosis which impacts parents, grandparents, loved ones,
13
friends, neighbors, and communities, and
14
WHEREAS, many infants, children, and teens suffer from the
15
long-term effects of comprehensive treatment, including
16
secondary cancers, and as many as two-thirds of childhood cancer
17
patients will experience late effects of chemotherapy or
18
radiation, which may persist or develop five years after
19
diagnosis, and
20
WHEREAS, although the incidence of childhood cancer has
21
been rising slightly in recent decades, survival rates continue
22
to improve as a result of improved treatment options, and
23
WHEREAS, the 5-year relative survival rate for childhood
24
cancer is higher than 80 percent; however, survival rates may
25
vary based on the type of cancer and the age of the patient, and
26
WHEREAS, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month serves as a
27
valuable opportunity to raise awareness of childhood cancer,
28
including the late effects of cancer treatment on childhood
29
cancer survivors and the need for early detection, immediate
30
care, and advanced research, and
31
WHEREAS, many health care professionals, researchers,
32
private philanthropies, and social support organizations are
33
dedicated to helping children and their families by offering
34
social, emotional, spiritual, educational, and financial support
35
and these groups and institutions are committed to generating a
36
greater understanding of childhood cancer and providing
37
assistance to those families affected by the disease,, NOW,

THEREFORE,

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

Florida:

That September 2026 is designated as "Childhood Cancer

Awareness Month" in Florida.
