1 House Resolution
2 A resolution designating May 15, 2026, as "Endangered
3 Species Day" in Florida.
5 WHEREAS, annually, on the third Friday in May, thousands of
6 people around the world participate in a global day of action
7 celebrating, learning about, and taking action to protect
8 endangered species, and
9 WHEREAS, wildlife refuges, gardens, schools, libraries,
10 museums, community groups, nonprofits, and individuals hold
11 special programs or events highlighting the significance of
12 protecting endangered species, and
13 WHEREAS, endangered species include plants and animals that
14 are determined to be threatened or endangered and are provided
15 protections under the United States Endangered Species Act, and
16 WHEREAS, there are over 1,300 threatened or endangered
17 species in the United States, and
18 WHEREAS, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
19 Commission maintains that endangered species in this state
20 include the leatherback sea turtle, the ivory-billed woodpecker,
21 the finback whale, the Florida panther, the humpback whale, the
22 Key Largo cotton mouse, the sperm whale, and many others, and
23 WHEREAS, education about threatened or endangered species,
24 growing native plants, reducing the use of outdoor chemicals,
25 and protecting wildlife habitats contribute to the protection of
26 threatened or endangered species, and
27 WHEREAS, education and advocacy have protected endangered
28 species such as the American alligator through conservation
29 efforts, NOW, THEREFORE,
31 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
32 Florida:
34 That May 15, 2026, is designated as "Endangered Species
35 Day."
