A resolution designating March 2026 as "Developmental

Disabilities Awareness Month" in Florida.

WHEREAS, developmental disabilities are a group of
6
conditions that cause impairments in physical, learning,
7
language, or behavioral areas, often beginning during the
8
developmental period and lasting throughout a person's lifetime,
9
and
10
WHEREAS, developmental disabilities include conditions such
11
as autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, attention-deficit
12
hyperactivity disorder, learning or intellectual disabilities,
13
hearing loss, vision impairment, and other developmental delays,
14
and
15
WHEREAS, approximately one in six children in the United
16
States are diagnosed with a developmental disability, and
17
WHEREAS, thousands of individuals with developmental
18
disabilities in Florida contribute to their communities,
19
workplaces, and schools when provided equitable access to
20
healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, and
21
WHEREAS, "Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month" was
22
established in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan to highlight the
23
importance of fostering a society where people with disabilities
24
are empowered to contribute to their communities, and
25
WHEREAS, national awareness campaigns and organizations
26
annually observe "Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month" in
27
March by understanding and acceptance of people with
28
developmental disabilities, supporting affected individuals and
29
their families, highlighting available resources and services,
30
and advocating for inclusive education, equitable employment
31
opportunities, and accessible communities, and
32
WHEREAS, while March provides an opportunity for heightened
33
awareness, true awareness and inclusion happen when communities
34
commit to creating accessible environments and productive
35
opportunities year-round, NOW, THEREFORE,

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

Florida:

That March 2026 is designated as "Developmental

Disabilities Awareness Month" in Florida.
