1 House Resolution
2 A resolution remembering and honoring the 70th
3 anniversary of the Tallahassee Bus Boycott and the
4 enduring legacy of its participants in the struggle
5 for civil rights.
7 WHEREAS, on May 26, 1956, Florida Agricultural and
8 Mechanical University students Wilhelmina Jakes and Carrie
9 Patterson challenged segregation laws by refusing to give up
10 their seats to white passengers in Tallahassee, and
11 WHEREAS, their arrest served as the catalyst for the
12 Tallahassee Bus Boycott, a protest involving African-American
13 residents who refused to ride public buses under discriminatory
14 seating practices, and
15 WHEREAS, under the leadership of Reverend C.K. Steele and
16 the Inter-Civic Council, the Tallahassee Bus Boycott garnered
17 community participation and established extensive carpool
18 operations, and
19 WHEREAS, the 70th anniversary of the Tallahassee Bus
20 Boycott in 2026 provides an opportunity to honor the
21 contributions of its participants during this pivotal time, NOW,
22 THEREFORE,
24 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
25 Florida:
27 That the Florida House of Representatives commemorates the
28 70th anniversary of the Tallahassee Bus Boycott.
